Driver's license:

With an international driver´s licence foreigners run in Paraguay constantly the risk to have problems with traffic controls. Although the law sais that an international driving licence must be recognized, in practice foreigners have problems, unless they have a paraguayen driver`s license. Driving in Paraguay with only an international driver’s license will probably put you in risk of having troubles with traffic control authorities because even if according to law & rules an international driving license has to be admitted, getting a Paraguayan driving license is the best way to avoid such troubles.

In Paraguay a driving test is not required to obtain a national driver`s licence. A visit to the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency is enough to avoid driving without the paraguayen documents. However, the licence for foreigners is only valid for one year. Once having a national ID card, you may get a driver’s license with a five-years-validity. For a new licence card a fee needs to be paid. They will also inspect whether there remain unpaid traffic violations.

According to the paraguayen law, the import of vehicles older than 10 years is not permitted. In some cases, and upon payment of a special fee, however, immigrants can apply for an exception. The fees are additional to the duties that need to be paid for each vehicle.
